Back in December I commented upon a recent happening in the Evangelical world which involved a paper produced by 138 Muslim clerics, leaders, and intellectuals. The document was titled "A Common Word Between Us and You". Shortly thereafter a document was offered as the Christian response (the authorship base stemming from Yale University) which was quickly endorsed by hundreds of Christians pastors and leaders--including some of the biggest names in Evangelicalism.
In that post I criticized the Christian paper for failing to offer anything that was distinctively Christian. Please note, I was not (and am not) against interfaith discussions. I was happy when I first heard that a Christian response was formulated and anxiously printed it off the internet so I could read it. What I am against is the failure of Christians to be Christian. While the paper was a wonderful humanitarian document (promising good will, mutual respect, etc), frankly it could have been written by a deist, a mormon, an orthodox Jew, or a member of the Bahai faith.
John Piper, pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church, has now entered the discussion and has voiced his opposition to the document - much on the same grounds as my initial objection back in December (though certainly stated in wiser verbage). The video below is John Piper's reponse:
