Is There No God in Israel?

"This is what the LORD says, 'Is it because there is no God in Israel for you to consult
that you have sent messengers to Baal, the god of Ekron?'"
2 Kings 1:16

Do you remember the last job God gave to Elijah? It was the very last thing God asked of Elijah before he was ushered into Heaven.

He was asked to confront the evil king Ahaziah. The king had fallen off the porch of his palace and was injured. Apparently, the injury was serious and the king was worried he might not recover. He sent messengers to the priests asking them to pray to God to see if he would be healed. The problem was he sent his messengers to the priests of an entirely different religion! The Philistines, whose capital city was Ekron, worshiped a deity called Baal. Years earlier Ahaziah rejected faith in God and embraced the religion of the Philistines. 1 Kings 22:53 tells us that "he served Baal and worshiped him". Elijah's message directly confronted this behavior: "is there no God is Israel that you would go instead to the false god of the Philistines?"

When you begin to feel overwhelmed by life do not forget that there is a loving Father who promises victory to those who run to Him. In the darkest hour of your temptation, remember that there is a sovereign Lord who protects and guides those who trust Him. In such moments, let David's prayer become your own: "My eyes are fixed only on you, O Sovereign LORD; in you I take refuge" (Ps 141:8).
