"For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power...."
2 Timothy 1:7
C4 is a plastic explosive used by our Armed Forces. It dates back to an invention by Alfred Nobel 1875, which he called gelignite (though today's compounds are very different). Though highly explosive and deadly, C4 has the texture of modeling clay and is quite safe by itself. It can be molded, squeezed, and hit without any danger of harm. You can even shoot it with a gun or set it on fire without risk of danger. In fact, during the Vietnam War American soldiers would use small amounts of C4 to heat rations!
But just because its safe doesn't mean that it isn't powerful. The same is true with the power that comes from the Holy Spirit. In fact, the Greek word for power is dunamis, which is where we get our modern English word 'dynamite'.
This is a power that can overcome demonic strongholds. It is a power that can resist temptation. Ultimately, it's a power that can proclaim Christ effectively even in the most adverse situations. Because of this power, we have the courage to tell others about Jesus and what he has done for us.
What makes this power so formidable is that it isn't ours. It doesn't originate from us. According to Ephesians 3:20, it is Christ's power that is at work within us. Think about that! The power of the sovereign Lord of the Universe is contained in the life of an ordinary Christian! Yet he freely gives us this power and authority (Luke 9:1), always to do His will.
Do you realize the power that you possess as a believer in Jesus Christ?
Are you opening yourself up to this power or limiting it?
Are you using this power to make a difference for Christ?
